The White House
Set in Winchester, the project offers a sense of calm, contemporary living that complements the distinctly traditional character of the existing house, allowing the original building to stand proudly on its own while opening it up to feel lighter, more connected, and more modern.
A defining element of the extension is the louvred rooflight positioned above the pool, introducing a gentle, controlled wash of daylight into the space. As the sun shifts, the louvres cast subtle chevron patterns across the tiled feature wall, adding movement and depth without overwhelming the room’s calm atmosphere.
The design brings greater clarity to the home by creating stronger connections between the main living spaces. A more open layout allows light, movement, and views to flow naturally through the plan, giving the house a renewed sense of openness and ease.
A key ambition was to reinforce the relationship with the garden. Larger glazed openings and a clearer alignment of spaces draw the landscape into the home, making the living areas feel brighter and more connected to their surroundings. The result is a calm, contemporary extension that enhances everyday living while respecting the traditional character of the original house.
